Croatian Povitica

Serves: 2-3 loaves
You will need a batch of Croatian sweet bread. You can either make the filling the day before and cool overnight, or make the filling while the bread dough is rising.
  • 2c Milk
  • 4c Ground Walnuts
  • 2c Sugar
  • 1 Small Jar Honey
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 Stick Butter
  • 4-6 eggs
  • 1c Golden Raisins (if desired)
  1. Scald milk.
  2. Mix nuts, sugar, and cinnamon in pan with hot milk.
  3. Add butter & eggs 1 at a time.
  4. Mix & cook until thick.
  5. Cool over night or in the freezer while Croatian bread is rising.
  6. Add honey when dough is ready.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°
  8. Lay tablecloth or sheet on table and cover with flour.
  9. Roll out dough until very thin (should be see through).
  10. Evenly spread filling on dough covering to the edges.
  11. Sprinkle with raisins if desired.
  12. Roll edge of the dough with hands then continue by lifting the sheet until fully rolled.
  13. Cut povitica tube into sections that fit into large greased bread pan.
  14. For large loaves, bake at 375° for 20 minutes, then 325° for 45 minutes.
